Chapter 100: Rāma Instructs Bharata About the Duties of a King

कच्चिदर्थेन वा धर्ममर्थं धर्मेण वा पुनः।
उभौ वा प्रीतिलोभेन कामेन च न बाधसे॥
kaccid arthena vā dharmam arthaṁ dharmeṇa vā punaḥ
ubhau vā prīti-lobhena kāmena ca na bādhase
kaccit = I hope You; arthena vā = make artha; dharmam = dharma; artham = artha; dharmeṇa = dharma obstruct; vā = or; punaḥ ubhau = both of them; vā = or; prīti-lobhena = out of a greed for sensual pleasure; kāmena ca = kāma obstruct; na = don’t; bādhase = obstruct.
I hope You don’t make artha obstruct dharma or dharma obstruct artha or kāma obstruct both of them out of a greed for sensual pleasure.
One meaning of this verse is: “I hope You don’t spend Your early mornings which are fit for earning pious credits (dharma) in earning money (artha). I hope You don’t spend Your day which are fit for earning money (artha) in earning pious credits (dharma). Out of a greed for sensual pleasure, I hope You don’t spend [Your early mornings and day which are respectively fit for earning pious credits and money] in sensual enjoyment which is prescribed for the evening.”
Another meaning of this verse is: “I hope You don’t give up dharma to pursue artha. I hope You don’t give up earning money needed to maintain Your family and so on to pursue dharma. I hope You don’t give up pursuing dharma and artha to pursue kāma with a desire for sensual pleasure.” Attachment to courtesans and so on effectively destroys [one’s endeavors to attain dharma and artha].
He then states the same in more specific terms in the next verse.
