tathā hi = thus; rāmaḥ = when Rāma; bharatena = by Bharata; tāmyatā = dejected; prasādyamānaḥ = beseeched; śirasā = by bowing down His head in respect; mahī-patiḥ = the Lord of earth; na ca eva = did not; cakre = fix; gamanāya = on going to Ayodhyā; sattvavān = the resolute Rāma; matim = His mind; pituḥ = of His father; tat-vacane = in [carrying out] the instructions; vyavasthitaḥ = He was fixed.
When Rāma, the Lord of earth, was thus beseeched by dejected Bharata by bowing down His head in respect, the resolute Rāma did not fix His mind on going to Ayodhyā. He was fixed in [carrying out] the instructions of His father.
