तदद्भुतं स्थैर्यमवेक्ष्य राघवे समं जनो हर्षमवाप दुःखितः।
न यात्ययोध्यामिति दुःखितोऽभवत्स्थिरप्रतिज्ञत्वमवेक्ष्य हर्षितः॥
tad adbhutaṁ sthairyam avekṣya rāghave
samaṁ jano harṣam avāpa duḥkhitaḥ
na yāty ayodhyām iti duḥkhito ’bhavat
sthira-pratijñatvam avekṣya harṣitaḥ
tat adbhutam = wonderful; sthairyam = steadfastness; avekṣya = upon seeing; rāghave = in Rāghava; samam = both; janaḥ = the people; harṣam = happy; avāpa = became; duḥkhitaḥ = and unhappy; na = not; yāti = He would go; ayodhyām = to Ayodhyā; iti duḥkhitaḥ = unhappy that; abhavat = they were; sthira-pratijñatvam = His steady determination to fulfill His promise [to His father]; avekṣya = upon seeing; harṣitaḥ = they were happy.
Upon seeing wonderful steadfastness in Rāghava, the people became both happy and unhappy. They were unhappy that He would not go to Ayodhyā. Upon seeing His steady determination to fulfill His promise [to His father], they were happy.
