Chapter 109: Rāma Refutes Jābāli
Text 2.109.12
उद्विजन्ते यथा सर्पान्नरादनृतवादिनः।
धर्मः सत्यं परो लोके मूलं स्वर्गस्य चोच्यते॥
udvijante yathā sarpān narād anṛta-vādinaḥ
dharmaḥ satya-paro loke mūlaṁ sarvasya cocyate
udvijante = people become agitated; yathā = as if; sarpāt = he is a snake; narāt = upon encountering a man; anṛta-vādinaḥ = who speaks untruth; dharmaḥ = dharma in which; satya-paraḥ = truthfulness is supreme; loke = in this world; mūlam = is the root [cause]; sarvasya = of all [benefits]; ca = and; ucyate = it is said that.
People become agitated upon encountering a man who speaks untruth as if he is a snake and it is said that dharma in which truthfulness is supreme is the root [cause] of all [benefits] in this world.
