Chapter 114: Ayodhyā’s loss of Splendor

बिडालोलूकचरितामालीननरवारणाम्।
तिमिराभ्याहतां कालीमप्रकाशां निशामिव॥

biḍālolūka-caritām ālīna-nara-vāraṇām
timirābhyāhatāṁ kālīm aprakāśāṁ niśām iva

biḍāla-ulūka-caritām = cats and owls wandered in Ayodhyā; ālīna-nara-vāraṇām = the gates of every man’s home in the city were locked; timira-abhyāhatām = overcome by darkness; kālīm = a moonless; aprakāśām = with no light whatsoever; niśām = night; iva = the city appeared to be like.

Cats and owls wandered in Ayodhyā. The gates of every man’s home in the city were locked. The city appeared to be like a moonless night overcome by darkness with no light whatsoever.
