Chapter 11: Kaikeyī Demands two Boons
Text 2.11.4

तामुवाच महातेजाः कैकेयीमीषदुत्स्मितः।
कामी हस्तेन संगृह्य मूर्धजेषु भुवि स्थिताम्॥

tām uvāca mahā-tejāḥ kaikeyīm īṣad-utsmitaḥ
kāmī hastena saṅgṛhya mūrdhajeṣu bhuvi sthitām

tām = to her [as follows]; uvāca = spoke; mahā-tejāḥ = the greatly powerful; kaikeyīm = at Kaikeyī; īṣat-utsmitaḥ = slightly smiled; kāmī = and passionate Daśaratha; hastena = with his hand; saṅgṛhya = he touched and; mūrdhajeṣu = her hair; bhuvi = on the floor; sthitām = who was.

The greatly powerful and passionate Daśaratha slightly smiled at Kaikeyī who was on the floor. He touched her hair with his hand and spoke to her [as follows].

Daśaratha slightly smiled at her because he thought, “Why do I need to promise you when I am your order carrier?” He thought that what she would ask him to do would be easy to carry out and was pleased that she was not afflicted by any sickness. He touched her hair to make her favorable to him and placed her head on his lap.
