Chapter 3: Virādha Carries Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.3.10
क्षुद्र धिक्त्वां तु हीनार्थं मृत्युमन्वेषसे ध्रुवम्।
रणे सम्प्राप्स्यसे तिष्ठ न मे जीवन्गमिष्यसि॥
kṣudra dhik tvāṁ tu hīnārthaṁ mṛtyum anveṣase dhruvam
raṇe samprāpsyase tiṣṭha na me jīvan gamiṣyasi
kṣudra = petty rākṣasa; dhik = fie; tvām tu = on you; hīna-artham = for an insignificant cause; mṛtyum = your death; anveṣase = you seek; dhruvam = certainly; raṇe = in battle [with Us]; samprāpsyase = you will attain it; tiṣṭha = wait; na = cannot; me = in front of Me; jīvan = alive; gamiṣyasi = you leave [this place].
Petty rākṣasa, fie on you! You seek your death for an insignificant cause. You will certainly attain it in battle [with Us]. Wait! You cannot leave [this place] alive in front of Me.
Kṣudra [literally means “O low-born!” and] the reason for Rāma contemptuously addressing him thus is stated: “You seek your death for an insignificant reason.” The reason was insignificant because he hankered for an excellent woman. Virādha would succeed in dying.
When Virādha got ready to leave with slight indifference, Rāma told him, “Wait! You cannot leave [this place] alive in front of Me.” It would be impossible for Virādha to leave [that place alive].
NOTE. Virādha’s hankering for an excellent woman (who was not his wife) is certainly demoniac as noted by Prabhupāda in his purport to Bhagavad-gītā 16.10 thus:
The demons have no satiation for their lust. […] Such demoniac people are only attracted by wine, women, gambling and meat-eating; those are their aśuci (unclean) habits.
Such a demoniac propensity is beneficial neither to oneself nor to others in the long run. This is clear from Chapter 16 of Bhagavad-gītā.
