स विनद्य महानादं शूलं शक्रध्वजोपमम्।
प्रगृह्याशोभत तदा व्यात्तानन इवान्तकः॥
sa vinadya mahā-nādaṁ śūlaṁ śakra-dhvajopamam
pragṛhyāśobhata tadā vyāttānana ivāntakaḥ
saḥ = Virādha; vinadya = and making; mahā-nādam = a loud noise; śūlam = a spear; śakra-dhvaja-upamam = as tall as an indra-dhvaja; pragṛhya = taking; aśobhata = appeared; tadā = then; vyātta-ānanaḥ = whose mouth was wide open; iva = like; antakaḥ = death [itself].
Taking a spear as tall as an indra-dhvaja and making a loud noise, Virādha whose mouth was wide open then appeared like death [itself].1
1 The expression indra-dhvaja appeared in Rāmāyaṇa 2.74.36. It refers to a tall column in the form of a man, decorated with flags, banners and so on. It is erected on the occasion of a certain festival. See the note to text 2.74.36 for some more details.
