Chapter 24: Lord Rāma Prepares to Fight With Khara’s Army
Text 3.24.28-29

सिंहनादं विसृजतामन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम्।
चापानि विस्फारयतां जृम्भतां चाप्यभीक्ष्णशः॥

विप्रघुष्टस्वनानां च दुन्दुभींश्चापि निघ्नताम्।
तेषां सुतुमुलः शब्दः पूरयामास तद्वनम्॥

siṁha-nādaṁ visṛjatām anyonyam abhigarjatām
cāpāni visphārayatāṁ jṛmbhatāṁ cāpy abhīkṣṇaśaḥ

vipraghuṣṭa-svanānāṁ ca dundubhīṁś cāpi nighnatām
teṣāṁ sutumulaḥ śabdaḥ pūrayām āsa tad vanam

siṁha-nādam visṛjatām = they roared like lions; anyonyam = at one another; abhigarjatām = bawled; cāpāni = their bows; visphārayatām = twanged; jṛmbhatām = looked up in pride; ca api abhīkṣṇaśaḥ = repeatedly; vipraghuṣṭa-svanānām ca = made low and deep sounds; dundubhīn = their dundubhī drums; ca api = and; nighnatām = beat; teṣām = their; sutumulaḥ = very tumultuous; śabdaḥ = sound; pūrayām āsa = filled; tat = the; vanam = forest.

They roared like lions, bawled at one another, twanged their bows, repeatedly looked up in pride, made low and deep sounds and beat their dundubhī drums.1 Their very tumultuous sound filled the forest.

The rākṣasas bawled at one another, “I will kill [our] enemy!”

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vipraghuṣṭa-svanānāṁ ghoṣo guñjanākhya-dhvani-viśeṣaḥ. “ghoṣo guñjana-mañjane” iti vaijayantī. bhāve niṣṭhā. tad-rūpa-svanavatām ity arthaḥ.
