Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 25: Śrī Rāma’s Battle with Khara’s Army
Text 3.25.6

ततः शरसहस्रेण राममप्रतिमौजसम्।
अर्दयित्वा महानादं ननाद समरे खरः॥

tataḥ śara-sahasreṇa rāmam apratimaujasam
ardayitvā mahā-nādaṁ nanāda samare kharaḥ

tataḥ = then; śara-sahasreṇa = with a thousand arrows; rāmam = Śrī Rāma; apratima-ojasam = of unmatched prowess; ardayitvā = appeared to torment; mahā-nādam nanāda = and roared very loudly; samare = in battle; kharaḥ = Khara.

Then Khara appeared to torment Śrī Rāma, whose prowess was unmatched, with a thousand arrows in battle and roared very loudly.1

1 Though ardayitvā literally means “having tormented,” this literal meaning does not suit the context because Lord Rāmacandra is also described here as apratimaujasam (“of unmatched prowess”). Technical note: ardayitvā ardayitvā iva.
