Chapter 25: Śrī Rāma’s Battle with Khara’s Army
Text 3.25.42
निहताः पतिताः क्षीणाश्छिन्ना भिन्ना विदारिताः।
तत्रतत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते राक्षसास्ते सहस्रशः॥
nihatāḥ patitāḥ kṣīṇāś chinnā bhinnā vidāritāḥ
tatra tatra sma dṛśyante rākṣasās te sahasraśaḥ
nihatāḥ = shot [by an arrow]; patitāḥ = fell down; kṣīṇāḥ = exhausted; chinnāḥ = cut; bhinnāḥ = broken up; vidāritāḥ = [or] torn asunder; tatra tatra = here and there; sma dṛśyante = were seen; rākṣasāḥ = of rākṣasas; te = they; sahasraśaḥ = thousands.
Thousands of rākṣasas were seen here and there. Shot [by an arrow], they fell down exhausted, cut, broken up [or] torn asunder.
Here the author states the variety of violence inflicted [upon the rākṣasas].
Patitāḥ (“fallen”) indicates that some of them had fallen on the ground in fear like thunderbolts. Kṣīṇāḥ (“exhausted”) indicates that the life-airs of some were in their throats. Chinnāḥ (“cut”) indicates that some were cut into two. Bhinnāḥ (“broken up”) indicates that parts of some of their bodies were broken up. Vidāritāḥ (“torn asunder”) indicates that some of their bodies were torn up from their neck to their navel just as Hiraṇyakaśipu [was torn asunder] by Lord Nṛsiṁha.
Tatra tatra (“here and there”) indicates that [the ground] was filled with a variety of such bodies.
