Chapter 30: Khara Destroyed
Text 3.30.11
अद्य शोकरसज्ञास्ता भविष्यन्ति निरर्थकाः।
अनुरूपकुलाः पत्न्यो यासां त्वं पतिरीदृशः॥
adya śoka-rasajñās tā bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ
anurūpa-kulāḥ patnyo yāsāṁ tvaṁ patir īdṛśaḥ
adya = today; śoka-rasajñāḥ = experience the mellow of sorrow; tāḥ = those; bhaviṣyanti = will; nirarthakāḥ = and who are now devoid of the human goal of sense enjoyment; anurūpa-kulāḥ = who belong to similar families; patnyaḥ = wives; yāsām = who have; tvam = you; patiḥ = husband; īdṛśaḥ = such a sinful as.
Today, those wives, who have such a sinful husband as you, who belong to similar families and who are now devoid of the human goal of sense enjoyment, will experience the mellow of sorrow.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: īdṛśa ity uktaṁ vivṛṇoti nṛśaṁseti.
“Who belong to similar families” indicates that Khara’s wives were evil in conduct, like him. Though they had no experience of sorrow, they would experience the mellow of sorrow.
He then elaborates on how sinful Khara has been in the next verse.1
