Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 35: Rāvaṇa Goes to Meet Mārīca Again
Text 3.35.29

तस्य तां सहसा शाखां भारेण पतगोत्तमः।
सुपर्णः पर्णबहुलां बभञ्ज च महाबलः॥

tasya tāṁ sahasā śākhāṁ bhāreṇa patagottamaḥ
suparṇaḥ parṇa-bahulāṁ babhañja ca mahā-balaḥ

tasya = its; tām sahasā = all of a sudden; śākhām = branch; bhāreṇa = with his weight; pataga-uttamaḥ = the best of birds; suparṇaḥ = Garuḍa; parṇa-bahulām = which was thick with leaves; babhañja ca = broke; mahā-balaḥ = the greatly powerful.

All of a sudden, the greatly powerful Garuḍa, the best of birds, broke its branch, which was thick with leaves, with his weight.

Garuḍa didn't try to break the branch. It broke because of his weight—he was carrying a large elephant and a turtle.
