Chapter 38: Mārīca Instructs Rāvaṇa
Text 3.38.7
बलेन चतुरङ्गेण स्वयमेत्य निशाचरान्।
वधिष्यामि मुनिश्रेष्ठ शत्रूंस्ते मनसेप्सितान्॥
balena catur-aṅgeṇa svayam etya niśācarān
vadhiṣyāmi muni-śreṣṭha śatrūn te manasepsitān
balena = army; catur-aṅgeṇa = with [my] fourfold; svayam = personally; etya = approaching; niśācarān = the night-rangers; vadhiṣyāmi = I will kill; muni-śreṣṭha = O best of sages; śatrūn = enemies; te = your; manasā īpsitān = as desired by you.
O best of sages, approaching the night-rangers with [my] fourfold army, I will personally kill your enemies as desired by you!
NOTE. The fourfold army consists of cavalry, elephants with their drivers, chariot-fighters and infantry. In his purport to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.10.32, Prabhupāda remarks in this regard:
Natural defensive measures are horses and elephants combined with chariots and men. Horses and elephants are trained to move to any part of the hills or forests and plains. The charioteers could fight with many horses and elephants by the strength of powerful arrows, even up to the standard of the brahmāstra (similar to modern atomic weapons).
