Chapter 52: Rāvaṇa Again Abducts Sītā
Text 3.52.40
उत्पन्नवाताभिहता नानाद्विजगणायुताः।
मा भैरिति विधूताग्रा व्याजह्रुरिव पादपाः॥
utpanna-vātābhihatā nānā-dvija-gaṇāyutāḥ
mā bhair iti vidhūtāgrā vyājahrur iva pādapāḥ
utpanna-vāta-abhihatāḥ = were shaken by the wind caused [by the forceful flight of Rāvaṇa]; nānā-dvija-gaṇa-āyutāḥ = because many birds [screeched]; mā bhaiḥ iti = don’t be afraid; vidhūta-agrāḥ = and the ends of their topmost branches trembled; vyājahruḥ = [the trees] tell [her]; iva = appeared to; pādapāḥ = the trees [on the ground].
The trees [on the ground] were shaken by the wind caused [by the forceful flight of Rāvaṇa] and the ends of their topmost branches trembled because many birds [screeched. The trees] appeared to tell [her], “Don’t be afraid!”
The tips of the topmost branches of the trees trembled because of the wind and because of the screeching of the birds. [Thus] the trees [appeared to] shake their heads to console [Sītā-devī].
