Chapter 52: Rāvaṇa Again Abducts Sītā
Text 3.52.41
नलिन्यो ध्वस्तकमलास्त्रस्तमीनजलेचराः।
सखीमिव गतोच्छ्वासामन्वशोचन्त मैथिलीम्॥
nalinyo dhvasta-kamalās trasta-mīna-jalecarāḥ
sakhīm iva gatocchvāsām anvaśocanta maithilīm
nalinyaḥ dhvasta-kamalāḥ = in the lotus ponds, the lotuses faded; trasta-mīna-jalecarāḥ = and fish and other aquatic creatures became terrified; sakhīm iva = [because] she was like their friend; gata-ucchvāsām = and she had fainted; anvaśocanta = the ponds lamented; maithilīm = for Maithilī.
In the lotus ponds, the lotuses faded and fish and other aquatic creatures became terrified. The ponds lamented for Maithilī [because] she was like their friend and she had fainted.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: gatocchvāsāṁ gata-prāṇāṁ mūrcchitām iti yāvat.
That the lotuses in the ponds had faded indicate that those ponds were [now] devoid of their [natural] beauty. “Fish and other aquatic creatures became terrified” indicates that the eyes and other senses of the fish, crocodiles and so on were agitated.
