Chapter 63: Rāma’s Pain of Separation from Sītā
Text 3.62.5
राज्यप्रणाशः स्वजनैर्वियोगः पितुर्विनाशो जननीवियोगः।
सर्वाणि मे लक्ष्मण शोकवेगमापूरयन्ति प्रविचिन्तितानि॥
rājya-praṇāśaḥ sva-janair viyogaḥ
pitur vināśo jananī-viyogaḥ
sarvāṇi me lakṣmaṇa śoka-vegam
āpūrayanti pravicintitāni
rājya-praṇāśaḥ = the loss of kingdom; sva-janaiḥ = from relatives; viyogaḥ = separation; pituḥ = of Our father; vināśaḥ = the death; jananī-viyogaḥ = and separation from My mother; sarvāṇi = all of them; me = My; lakṣmaṇa = O Lakṣmaṇa; śoka-vegam = the force of sorrow; āpūrayanti = they simply aggravate; pravicintitāni = when I remember.
O Lakṣmaṇa, when I remember all of them—the loss of kingdom, separation from relatives, the death of Our father and separation from My mother—they simply aggravate the force of My sorrow!
NOTE. That material existence is intrinsically miserable is clear from Bhagavad-gītā 8.15:
mām upetya punar janma duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam
nāpnuvanti mahātmānaḥ saṁsiddhiṁ paramāṁ gatāḥ
After attaining Me, the great souls, who are yogīs in devotion, never return to this temporary world, which is full of miseries, because they have attained the highest perfection.
By playing the part of a human being who has lost his dear wife, Lord Rāma is demonstrating the miseries of strī-saṅga to us, the conditioned souls of this world.
