Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 72: Kabandha Tells Rāma About Sugrīva
Text 3.72.10
tat = therefore; avaśyam tvayā kāryaḥ = You should make; saḥ = with someone; suhṛt = friends; suhṛdām = of friends; vara = O best; akṛtvā hi = if You don’t do so; na = no [hope of]; te = for You; siddhim = success; aham = I; paśyāmi = see; cintayan = despite my deliberations.
Therefore, You should make friends with someone, O best of friends. If You don’t do so, I see no [hope of] success for You despite my deliberations.
The second line offers the reason for what is stated in the first line. Lord Rāma’s success would be His attainment of Sītā-devī.
Who should Rāma accept as His friend? That is stated in the next verse.
