Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 72: Kabandha Tells Rāma About Sugrīva
Text 3.72.18

स च ते नावमन्तव्यः सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः।
कृतज्ञः कामरूपी च सहायार्थी च वीर्यवान्॥

sa ca te nāvamantavyaḥ sugrīvo vānarādhipaḥ
kṛtajñaḥ kāma-rūpī ca sahāyārthī ca vīryavān

saḥ ca = him; te = You; na = not; avamantavyaḥ = should insult; sugrīvaḥ = Sugrīva; vānara-adhipaḥ = is the king of monkeys; kṛtajñāḥ = he is grateful; kāma-rūpī ca = he can assume any form he likes; sahāya-arthī = he needs help; ca = and; vīryavān = he is heroic.

You should not insult him. Sugrīva is the king of monkeys. He is grateful. He can assume any form he likes and he is heroic. He needs help.

Sugrīva should not be insulted by the consideration, “He is after all an animal. What can he do?” The reason is stated in the second line of this verse.
